Well, i was supposed to not be home but New England is in the middle of another snowstorm so I am home after all. This is our third snowstorm which may explain why I’ve finished reading my second book for the year… Hooray for making progress toward goals!
The Painted Veil by M. Somerset Maugham. Great story, quite tragic, but, oddly, not very verbally inspirational. I usually like to pull a quote or two but they were few and far between. Here’s a bit of one from Mr. Waddington, describing Taoism to Kitty:
“… it is square without angles, a sound which ears cannot hear, and an image without form. it is a vast net and though it’s meshes are as wide as the sea it lets nothing through. it is the sanctuary where all things find refuge. it is nowhere, but without looking out the window you may see it…”
“does it mean anything?”
“sometimes, when i’ve had half a dozen whiskey’s and looking at the stars, i think perhaps it does.”
Now of course, I’m on a mission to see the film version. Not the 2006 version with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton. No, it’s the 1934 version with Greta Garbo I’m after.Highlights of the week:
Au revior, until Monday!
