“Mirage” is an art installation by Doug Aiken which takes the form of a single-story ranch house in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains, wrapped inside and out in mirrored surfaces.
From certain angles the house disappears almost completely into the landscape as it endlessly reflects. It is one of 16 artworks scattered around the Coachella Valley as part of the inaugural Desert X contemporary-art festival.
“As Mirage pulls the landscape in and reflects it back out, this classic one-story suburban house becomes a framing device, a perceptual echo-chamber endlessly bouncing between the dream of nature as pure uninhabited state and the pursuit of its conquest.”
The house, with its funhouse-mirror architecture, is especially well designed for selfies!
You can find the house via coordinates (33°50’59.6″N 116°33’57.5”W) or directions provided on the website. It will be open through October 2017.
