The first thing you need to know about Sargy Mann, is that he is a very successful artist. The second thing that you need to know about Sargy Mann, is that he is blind.
Mann started his career as a landscape painter but as he lost his sight, he found that he could still “see,” in a manner of speaking (he explains better than I could in video below), and continue his painting. Interestingly enough, using clay to mark his spots on the canvas, he began to paint people. In fact, he explains that he could actually do things he wouldn’t dare to do with sight. He uses bold blocks of colors, giving his work a certain hazy, dreamy Cezanne quality.
“I had to sortof reinvent painting for myself. It seems sortof more or less impossible but if you’re just determined to keep going, you know, you need to keep going. If your subject is your own experience then as long as you’re having an experience, you’ve got a subject.”
